You want me to eat what from the lake?

I get so tired of eating meat but, at the same time, I don't like beans very much. I find beans leave a weird, gritty, mushy feeling in my mouth and I just can't shake it. I have to mix lots of veggies with my beans like tomaotes, cilantro and cheese to make that taste not stick around.

Blue-Green Algae.

I want to talk algae! Most of you have heard of algae before, that fuzzy green stuff that grows in your ponds or sits on top of the lake towards the end of a hot summer. This is not particularly the algae I want to talk about. I mean the stuff you can buy from your local health food store, the kind that is specifically farmed for us, grown, dried and ready for us to consume.

Spirulina.

There is approximately 1800 different species of blue-green algae but spirulina remains one of the most popular to consume. Spirulina is a high-protein food that contains ALL the amino acids (amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.) It is considered a rejuvenator and is used during times of fasting as well as in weight loss programs. Spirulina is so beautifully green because of all the chlorophyll (essentially energy from the sun) but it has a powerful flavor so don't go sniffing the container or you may be thinking "What the fuck did you just get me into Candace? Did I just buy the bottom of the lake?"

It's a flavour that grows on you, but not literally ;)

Now that I have grown to crave the taste, I don't mind adding straight spirulina to my smoothies. However, this is not how I started out with my Spirulina journey. Let me inform you of a few more benefits before I let you in on a yummy treat.

Benefits:

  • High in Protein

  • Antioxidant

  • Anti-nflammatory

  • Lowers bad cholesterol

  • Reduces blood pressure

  • Helps with anemia

  • Helps improve muscle strength and endurance

Now for the Tasty Treat!

The first product that helped me fall in love with Spirulina was Green Juice from Organifi. They have a minty green juice blend that contains spirulina, chlorella (green algae,) beets, matcha green tea and other amazing superfoods. Check them out at www.organifishop.com. Another page I love to follow is @hawaiianspirulina on Instagram because they have so many amazing picture ideas of what you can do with spirulina.

It is time to look at protein through a different lens. If you are tired of the same old chicken meal each week, switch it up and give Spirulina a whirl.
